In the November issue of DownBeat, you can see a feature that I wrote for their "Master Class" column. When I was first asked to contribute to the magazine I didn’t feel very confident about sharing any ideas on drumming. There are plenty of resources out there that could do a much better job and provide detailed information. I focused my essay on the idea of group arranging. In short this means how music (tunes if you will) are sometimes created off of the page by the collective work of a "band." Having an 800-word limit I did my best to condense the concept, which easily could turn into a dissertation. Sorry to say that the piece that they published was not the full article that I wrote. The original text was edited down and didn't include some key elements that I felt offered some historical contexts. Also not included were both transcriptions for comparison. You can check out the full piece here.
